Getting over it, one bad decision at a time.
Somewhere between vision boarding your dream career and actually living it, something went sideways. You built the whole thing anyway. Now you're standing inside a life that fits like a shirt you bought in the wrong size because it was on sale and you were optimistic.
You bought the journals, hired the therapist, and overhauled your entire morning routine. You feel better. You look better. Nothing has actually changed. Welcome to the rebrand.
Somewhere between your third manifestation journal and your fourteenth 'I'm literally manifesting this' TikTok comment, the universe started listening. Unfortunately, it was listening to the jokes, the spiraling 2 AM thoughts, and the extremely casual offhand remarks you made about wanting chaos. Congratulations. You got it.
At some point, "I've already invested so much" stopped being a red flag and started being a life philosophy. This is the story of how an entire generation learned to stay — in jobs, cities, relationships, and situationships — not because things were good, but because leaving felt like admitting the time was wasted. It wasn't resilience. It was just really committed denial.
The guitar has been sitting in the corner of your bedroom for fourteen months. You have not touched it. It just watches you. This is about that guitar, and the painting class you dread, and the novel that is definitely getting finished 'this year,' and why we keep pouring time and money into creative hobbies we secretly cannot stand anymore.
You downloaded a hiking app, learned the difference between a Pinot Noir and a Cabernet, and started saying things like 'I love being outdoors.' You dated them for six weeks. You have not been outdoors since. Here's a full autopsy of the person you briefly became for someone who didn't even text back consistently.
You've given your soul-crushing job your best years, your lunch breaks, and approximately 4,000 hours of fake enthusiasm. But here's the thing nobody puts on a motivational poster: time already spent is not a plan. It's just a receipt.
You cried when they went through their breakup. You defended them in comment sections. You know things about their family dynamics that their actual therapist probably knows. And yet — they have no idea you exist. Welcome to parasocial relationships, the defining friendship format of the chronically online era.
You don't actually like half these people anymore. You haven't since roughly the second Obama term. But here you are, confirming your attendance to a birthday brunch for someone whose texts you let age like fine wine in your notifications. The sunk cost fallacy isn't just for bad investments and mediocre Netflix series — it's been quietly running your social life this whole time.
You posted a golden-hour selfie captioned 'feeling grateful ✨' approximately forty minutes after crying in your car in a Trader Joe's parking lot. The photo got 200 likes. The crying got none. Welcome to the parallel universe most of us are quietly maintaining — the curated one where we have it together, and the real one where we absolutely, definitively do not.
You've been in this relationship for two and a half years, survived one major fight about dishes, and already paid for a joint Airbnb in Asheville. Leaving now would just be wasteful, right? Wrong — but also, deeply relatable. Welcome to the sunk cost fallacy, your actual long-term partner.
You swore you'd never become your parents. And yet here you are, standing in a grocery store, quietly furious that eggs cost that much, with a strong stance on throw pillow count and a new appreciation for a good Tuesday night in. The transformation is complete. This is fine.
You saw the signs. You made a PowerPoint in your head. You ignored every single one of them and texted back anyway. This is a judgment-free zone — except we're absolutely judging ourselves along with you. Here's the definitive list of dating red flags we rationalize, ranked from 'probably fine' to 'girl, what.'
Science — okay, vibes — suggests your most catastrophic life choices are secretly your greatest assets. We talked to real people who survived their own disasters and came out the other side with a genuinely incredible party story. Turns out, suffering has an incredible ROI.
