You can ride a small scooter or moped with L plates, or you can obtain the new AM licence that allows you to ride bikes up to 50cc, with a maximum speed of 45mph. Motor vehicles with trailers
Category A2 includes motor vehicles that have trailers. These are not vehicles pulled by drivers, but rather towed by larger vehicles like cars. This category includes, for example a tractor towing a trailer, or small trucks designed to carry loads, like the ones used by plumbers and painters to transport supplies and tools to the work site. The maximum authorised mass (MAM) for this category is 8,250kg.
To drive a vehicle in this class you must pass the theory test for category A1 or have obtained a driver's license through direct entry. You may also be required to pass a driving test based on the type of vehicle you plan to drive.
The licence you receive for category A2 is valid for three years from the date on which you take your theory exam. To keep it valid, you must renew before the expiration date.
In addition to the categories listed above, you can be granted a driving license for other vehicles that have special requirements. You require a specific licence to drive a large vehicle (category C), which requires you to be aware of the specific rules for the transport of dangerous goods.
A car driving licence in category B will allow you to drive an automobile and a trailer that don't meet the requirements of category C. This is where code 96 comes into. Code 96 is added to your licence for category B drivers licences after you have passed your theory test and practical test but your vehicle and trailer don't qualify for a category C license according to the normal rules.
To be able to drive a vehicle of this type you must hold a driving licence for category B for at least two years and pass a theory test and practical test for this category. You must also have attended an specialized course and completed additional training to be able to drive this. This is referred to as a driver's training course.
