The category A2 driving license allows you to drive motorcycles without a sidecar with a maximum engine power of 35 kW. The ratio of power to weight must not exceed 0.2 kg/kW.
The step-by-step process of constructing this driving license allows you to obtain your small motorcycle driving license early and gradually progress to higher engine power by obtaining the A2 licence.
Motorcycles and scooters
Driving license category A2 is the second stage of motorcycle driving licence. It permits the use of small-sized motorcycles (up to 50cc) and mopeds with a maximum cubic capacity of 125cc. The course is designed to let you slowly climb the ladder of engine power and to savor the possibility of a larger one. The test is slightly more difficult than that of the first category, and you need to attend more theory lessons for it.
The category A2 driver's licence is valid until the age of 24. It can be used in conjunction with a car driving licence category A1 or as a part of a provisional category B driver's licence. If you're over 24 years old,, you need a full category A driving licence to operate motorcycles with more than 35 kW.
You can obtain your group A1 licence at the age of 16 (in Denmark, Malta, and Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic; in Germany, Hungary, Iceland and in the following countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Italy and Poland). When you reach the age of 16, you must take the motorbike test in the category A2. You must pass the test prior to turning 18. After two years, you can be upgraded to category A.
After passing the test in category A2, you will be permitted to ride a motorcycle, with or without a sidecar, and vehicles that have up to 35 kW of power. The vehicles must also have a power/weight ratio of no greater than 0.2 kg/kW and must not be derived from a vehicle that has twice the maximum power.
If you have passed the two-part test for a motorcycle or moped that is lower in class from the 1st July 1996, you can skip the theory exam and only take the practice test. You can ride a small moped or scooter that has L plates or you can obtain the new AM licence which will enable you to ride 50cc bikes with a top speed of 45mph. The AM licence is valid if you've passed your theory test and have completed nine hours of driving training at a driving school.
Four-wheeled vehicles
This category includes all motorized vehicles that have four wheels, except for passenger cars and buses. This category also includes utility vehicles like pickups vans, panels and pickups. In addition, there are motor homes, campers and lorries. This category also includes vehicles such as hearses, ambulances and carryalls which are designed to transport more than eight passengers or have a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg. A1 drivers are able to drive vehicles of this kind with a trailer weighing up to 775kg.
You must pass the theory test to drive a vehicle in this category. You must pass 12 90-minute classes on the fundamental material, and four 90-minute lessons on the additive (category AA2). The theory tests require a minimum score of 70%.
If you pass the theory test, you will be required to do a practical driving test on private land and on public roads. After passing both tests, you will be issued a request for your driving license. You must present this request to the local authority within three years of passing your practical test.
After passing your driving test, you are able to begin driving vehicles in the category A2. In some countries, once you have a full A1 license for two years, there is no need to take a separate test to obtain an A2 driving license which permits you to drive motorcycles with up to 35 kW. This permits you to learn on less powerful two-wheelers prior to upgrading to more powerful machines.
If you have a category A2 driving licence you can also ride tricycles provided that they have the capacity of cylinders up to 125cc and an output of not more than 11 kW. This category was earlier part of the A licence. All drivers who received a full category A licence before 19th January 2013 were able to ride mopeds and retain that right.
Motor vehicles with 5 or more wheels
This category includes vehicles with motors that are designed to be used on the road for the transportation of goods or passengers. These vehicles should have at least two or three wheels that are in contact with the ground and a driver's seat or saddle, and a motor that is able to achieve speeds of 20 miles per hour or more. They are typically equipped with a steering wheel as well as brakes. They also have the ability to be controlled in a normal direction, and can also travel in reverse. In certain instances these vehicles are equipped with a hood or other covering that can be opened. Historically, this classification has been applied to trucks (van mini-van, mini-van panel, pickup, sport utility) and busses that carry 16 or more passengers. A slightly different definition is used by a separate federal requirement that regulates uniform standards for licensing of commercial vehicle drivers. This definition excludes vehicles with a weight of 26,001 pounds or more.
Additionally, the category A2 driving license may also be used to drive a moped motorcycle or motor-driven cycle. This type of driving license is only valid for motors that have a maximum cylinder volume of 125 cubic centimeters, or a maximum power of 15 kilowatts. It is also possible to use it to drive a motor tricycle. This license class requires a minimum age of 16 years old. Physically disabled individuals may be able to ride motor tricycles that fall in category A1 or A.
Some people choose to obtain an operator license which is valid for vehicles with a a maximum authorised mass of 3,500kg and up to eight seats. A driver's operator license allows them to tow trailers up to 750kg MAM. They are also able to transport a trailer as heavy as 3,500kg with a tractor or construction equipment.
NHTSA must ensure that its guidelines remain current as the designs of different types of two-wheeled and three-wheeled vehicle continue to evolve. Manufacturers, importers, and import specialists often request agency interpretations of the proper classification of their vehicles. Motor vehicles that have trailers
The category A2 includes motorized vehicles that have trailers. These are not driven by drivers, but rather towed by larger vehicles, such as cars. For example the tractor that pulls trailers would fall into this category, as would small trucks that have been made to carry loads, such as those employed by plumbers or painters to transport tools and equipment to a work site. The maximum permitted mass (MAM) for this category, is 8,250kg.
To drive a vehicle in this class, you must have completed the theory test for category A1 or have obtained a driver's license through direct entry. You may also need to pass a practical driving test based on the type of vehicle you plan to drive.

In addition to the categories above, you can also get a licence to drive other vehicles that have special requirements. You need a special license to drive a large vehicle (category C) and you have to know the regulations for the transport of dangerous products.
